Introduction
Circle Jail Berhampur is one of the oldest jail in Odisha which is established in the year 1863 during the British era. When it was started it consisted of only four wards and 24 cells. But in the year 1942 the jail was extended with another six wards and one quarantine ward. Now, the jail is spread over 13 acres and total area is consists of 48 Acres. At present Circle jail Berhampur consists of 25 number of wards and 28 no cells. The only Gallows which is functional in the Odisha jail is situated adjacent to the perimeter wall of the Jail. A newly constructed 30 bedded hospital started functional inside the jail in the month of January 2020. The scheduled capacity of Circle Jail Berhampur is 743. During the freedom struggle many freedom fighter of Odisha including great tribal freedom fighter Sir Laxman Naik were imprisoned in this jail by the British Government. The great Marty tribal freedom fighter Sir Laxman Naik was hanged by the British in this jail on 29th march in the year 1943. In the starting of the jail during the British era the convict R.I. were engaged in the (Ghana) oil pressing unit and Chakki. But now a day’s scenario has changed and many industries like weaving, smithy, Tailoring, Durry making and phenyl making have been started inside the jail for engagement and rehabilitation of the convict prisoners. The convict prisoners can able to get vocational training from these units and earn some incentive as per the government norms. Besides these, the convicts are also engaged in general kitchen, barbering, sweeping and gardening. The sole objective of this jail is treatment of abnormal mind and brings back to the mainstream of society after getting reform. So many reformative works have been undertaken to bring back the wrongdoers to the mainstream of the society. A computer literacy programs has been continuing to impart practical knowledge in use of computer to the inmate. Further, one IGNOU study centre has established inside the jail to impart certified courses in various field and academic courses from intermediate to Postgraduates. Many inmates are taking the advantage of the study facilities inside the jail. The inmates are also encouraged for practicing yoga inside the jail, so the Patanjali yoga classes have been conducted in everyday morning. The inmates have been provided with television sets to aware about the happening of outside world.
