In modern age, the concept of penology has undergone ideological changes with far-reaching impact. Correction, not retribution, is looked upon as the basic objective. The ancient Penal Code which insisted upon ‘an eye for an eye’ and ‘tooth for a tooth’ and being considered inhuman and barbaric has been rejected by the society. Every man is born good and criminality is a curable disease. If every saint has a past, every sinner has a future also. Modern jurists and sociologists are of the opinion that a criminal can be cured through the process of prevention, correction and rehabilitation.
